What is radon and why is radon mitigation important?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into homes from the ground. It forms when uranium breaks down in the rock and soil underground. Radon gas is colourless, odourless, and tasteless; making it an invisible threat to your family’s health.
How does radon get into my home?
Almost all homes in Canada have some radon in them, but the levels can vary dramatically even between homes built right next to each other. Building materials, the exact soil composition of the lot, the condition of your home’s foundations and even your individual lifestyle as the occupant of your home can affect the levels of radon in your house. Because there are so many factors that contribute to indoor radon levels, the only way to know for sure whether your health is at risk is to test the radon level.
Does my house have radon?
The only way to know for sure if your home has dangerous levels of radon gas is to test for it. A routine radon test should last a minimum of 91 days during heating season (fall/winter). It is important to test for radon during the colder months, typically between October and April, as indoor radon levels naturally increase when people keep their windows and doors shut against the cold. It is also important to test for an extended period of time because daily indoor radon levels can fluctuate dramatically, and a smaller sample size could cause undue alarm or lull you into a false sense of security depending on the day.
How can I reduce radon levels in my house?
You’ve tested your radon levels and the results showed a dangerous level of radon gas in your home – Now what? Radon exposure is a serious health concern and you should not ignore high levels of radon gas in your home. You also cannot reliably or consistently reduce radon levels at home by yourself. Radon mitigation systems need to be designed and installed by a radon mitigation professional.
