Is Your Toilet Running Up Your Water Bill?

By Admin In Uncategorized No comments

If you have leaky pipes or a leaky toilet, you are literally flushing money down the drain. Next time you receive a water bill in the mail, take a good look at how much water your family is using each month. If it is more than 12,000 gallons per month, you likely have some serious leakage happening.

One great way to do this is to monitor your water meter over a two-hour period where you know you aren’t using any water. If there is movement on the meter, you know you have a leak somewhere.

The good news is that leaks are typically easy and inexpensive to fix. One of the more common culprits for water leaks in the home is the toilet. As the inner components of your toilet wear out over time due to use and because they sit in water all the time, it is common for the toilet flapper or valve seal to become loose and worn out. An improper seal here means water is leaking out and constantly running.

A quick and easy test to see if this is in fact, the source of your leak is to add a few drops of food coloring to the tank of your toilet and see if it makes its way into the bowl without having flushed the toilet at all. If in fifteen minutes the water in your toilet bowl has colored, you found the leak.
